Don Canvass Interdisciplinary Skills for Pharmacy



The Chairman Board of Fellows Pharmaceutical Council of Nigeria (PCN) Prof. Mrs Mbang Nyong Femi-Oyewo has encouraged newly inducted Pharmacist graduate of Igbinedion University, Okada to explore competence and excellence in wider field beyond the practice of Pharmacy. Prof. Oyewo while speaking as a Guest Lecturer at the 9th Induction of Pharmacy Graduate of Dora Akunyili College of Pharmacy noted that graduate of Pharmacy have excelled in fields aside the practice of Pharmacy including Banking, Politics, Telecommunication, Academics, Manufacturing among others.

Prof. Oyewo noted that some managing directors of notable banks in Nigeria are Pharmacist. This she noted should be the quality of a properly groomed graduate of any discipline in Nigeria including Pharmacy, She therefore among other things encourage the new graduates to be focus, Hard working and humble, never give-up, trust in God, pay attention to their weakness and know what they want in life and go for it early, She further advised them to choose their friend wisely be good ambassadors of the University and invest in their development.

Quoting from the Mahatma Ghandi, Prof. (Mrs) Femi Oyewo charge them that “ the future is contained with what you do in the present” She informed the new grandaunt that the role of a Pharmacist is not limited to the Pharmacy Store noting that the role of a Pharmacist cover Production, Importation, Exportation, Distribution, Retailing, Sales and dispensing of Drugs. She encouraged those who would pursue professional practice as a Pharmacist that the Pharmacist is the most vital link in the Health Care delivery Chain and that Medical practitioners all rely on the Pharmacist to proffer solutions to their diagnosis and observations. She however warned the new Grandaunt too adhere to the ethic of the profession warning that there are heavily sanctions including withdrawal of licence from erring practitioner.

Also speaking at the Ceremony the Registrar of Pharmaceutical Council Nigeria (PCN) Pharmacist Elijah Mohammed cautioned the newly grandaunt to lay aside the pursuit of money and pursue of Professionalism which he assured them will result with great wealth and success; he enjoined them to pursue professional relationships and abide by the ethics of the profession. Pharmacist Elijah Mohammed counsel the young grandaunt not to fall in the error of the predecessor who in pursue of bigger pay jump from industry to government employment and later to lecturing. He said such unstable career path put the practitioner at risk of incompetence and lack of Professionalism.

The Registrar therefore announced the Council’s resolve to institute the PREP as tool for quality assurance which focuses on promoting professionalism of the Pharmacist. He said the Pharmacy Council of Nigeria (PCN) has swifted shifted focus from quality drug production to assurance of practicing Pharmacist. He admonish the graduands to seek counsel at al times and to wait for their time.

Also speaking at occasion was the Special Guest of Honour Professor Abiodun Falodun, Rector Edo State Polytechnic, commended Igbinedion University, Okada for its achievements in all areas over the last 21 years particularly the remarkable giant stride of the current Vice-Chancellor in the last 18 months. Prof. Falodun assures the general public that if they thinking about of the Future they should think about IUO.

Also Chief Henry Osato Bazuaye JP. The Aiwerioghene of Benin Kingdom, former Bursar, University of Benin appeal to graduand to focus on researching especially on herbs to combat emerging illness, he assured them that Africa is full of herbs with enough potential to cause medical therapy production. He in the same vein praised the Hon. Chancellor for foresight of establishing Igbinedion University, Okada.

Earlier in his address the Vice-Chancellor and Chief Host Professor Ikechukwu Ezemonye, Vice-Chancellor Igbinedion University, Okada gave an insightful account of his stewardship in University and the Achievements recorded by the University in the area of Collaboration and the Linkages Universities within and outside the country, the ICT revolution, Internationalization of academic programs and successful accreditation of all academic program by the Nigeria Universities Commission (NUC) and other relevant body including Pharmaceutical Council of Nigeria (PCN) as par Pharmacy program in the University. Professor Ezemonye assured the audience of the University’s resolved to successfully concluded it pursuit of D. Pharm program commencing next Session in the College of Pharmacy in the University. He Thank the Registrar and the members of the Council of the (PCN) for their support and commitment to the growth of the College of Pharmacy in the University, while assuring them that the University will continue to uphold the standard lay down by the NUC.

Prof. Ezemonye stated emphatically that IUO is not ready nor willing to share its Leadership position and competitive edge with any institution and will not rest on its Oars.

The Dean Dr. Igghodaro Igbe in his own remark thank the University Management for the support enjoy by the College of Pharmacy including the recent approval for approval for a Building and Machinery for production of methylated spirit for commercial sale. Dr. Igbe affirmed that this innovation will further strengthen teaching and research to meet the immediate Health needs of the Igbinedion University Teaching Hospital and other Health Care Sector in Edo State.

He said that the Forest reserve has signed MOU with the College to train staff of FRIN on Collection, study and conservation herbarium specimens and tissues samples for research purposes as well as offer technical assistance in a botanical survey and documentation of medical plant in Ovia North East Area of Edo State.
