IUO Library

Igbinedion University Library opened in what is now the College of Health Sciences (Medical) Library at the campus site of the University in October 1999 with the recruitment of the first professional librarian into the library. The appointment of the pioneer University Librarian in November 1999, followed closely by the recruitment of a set of junior staff, marked the beginning as it were of the rendering of professional services by the Library. The Library has since moved to, and now operates from, the Central Administration Building at the main campus of the University.

The Library is the heart of the University. It is at the centre of academic activities of Igbinedion University. The University Library operates a decentralized library system. The system is itself based on the University’s academic structure, which is Collegiate in nature. Thus, there are seven (7) Colleges, each of which has its own College Library. The Colleges and their libraries are as follows:

  • College of Arts & Social Sciences(CASS) Library
  • Sanusi Lamido Sanusi College of Business & Management Studies(CBM )Library
  • Abdul Salaam Abubakar College of Engineering Library
  • Oba Okunade Sijuade College of Health Sciences(Medical ) Library
  • Oba Erediauwa College of Law Library
  • College of Natural & Applied Sciences Library
  • Dora Akunyili College of Pharmacy Library

There is also a Dept of Nursing Library (Nursing is not yet an autonomous College but the Library is being developed at the instance of the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria and the NUC’s departmental library policy requirement).

The Library administration is run centrally from the University Librarian’s office. The office occupies the ground floor of the East wing of the Central Administration Building. Reader Services, Cataloguing & Classification and Collections Development Divisions of the Library together with the University Librarian’s Office constitute the Main Library around which revolve the College Libraries. Books are processed centrally before they are sent to the various libraries. Each College Library houses its own collection. However, as CASS and CBMS are domiciled in the Central Administration Building, books, journals and subject reference materials belonging to both College Libraries are among the materials currently shelved in the Main Library.

As part of the Library’s extension services, a new library is under construction in Crown Estate, where all the students and staff of the University live. It is to form part of a building complex is known as ‘Alumni Building’. The library component of the building will house about 10 000 volumes of Undergraduate Reserve Collection and general reading materials when fully operational. It will seat about 1000 readers at a time and provide internet facility all day long.
