  • NIGERIAN ENGINEERING OLYMPIAD: IGBINEDION UNIVERSITY STUDENTS ADVANCE TO REGIONAL FINALS.

Two students of Igbinedion University Okada have qualified for the Regional Stage of the Nigerian Engineering Olympiad (NEO) with their innovative project titled “SMART-FLARE AI-Enabled Gas Capture and Monetization System.”

In a letter addressed to the Vice-Chancellor of the institution, Prof. Lawrence Ikechukwu Ezemonye, PhD, FAS, the Nigerian Engineering Olympiad Management Team announced that Esther Anene and Aigbe-Edebor Gaius, both Petroleum Engineering students, advanced following a highly competitive national review process. Their innovation uses artificial intelligence to capture and monetize flared gas, addressing a major environmental and economic challenge in Nigeria’s oil and gas sector.

The Igbinedion University, Okada, team will compete against four other top regional teams at the next event in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, from April 19–21, 2026. Top-performing teams will advance to the bootcamp stage of the Olympiad.

To support prototype development ahead of the competition, the NEO has awarded the team a ₦3,000,000 grant, which also covers logistics, accommodation, and feeding during the regional event.

The Nigerian Engineering Olympiad was established to identify, nurture, and promote high-impact engineering innovations from undergraduate and postgraduate students across tertiary institutions in Nigeria.
  • IGBINEDION UNIVERSITY TRIUMPHS AS REGIONAL CHAMPION IN HUAWEI ICT COMPETITION, ADVANCES TO GLOBAL FINAL IN CHINA

Nigeria’s Premier Private University, Igbinedion University, Okada (IUO), achieved a significant milestone in the recently concluded Huawei ICT Competition. Team IUO clinched first place in the Sub Saharan Africa Region and was awarded the Grand Prize in the Network Track Category as the best team from the region.

Team IUO outperformed competitors across the Sub Saharan Africa region to claim the top spot. This significant victory qualifies the team to represent Nigeria at the Huawei ICT Global Final in China, where the team will compete in the Network Track Category against top talents from other countries. Notably, IUO stands out as the only Private University from Nigeria to reach this prestigious global stage.

The Huawei ICT Competition is an annual international talent development initiative organized by Huawei in partnership with Universities and UNESCO-IBE. It focuses on practical skills in areas such as networking, cloud computing, computing, innovation, and emerging technologies like AI and IoT. The competition typically progresses through preliminary, national, regional, and global stages, attracting tens of thousands of students worldwide.

IUO’s achievement marks a notable first for a Private Nigerian University in reaching the Global Final. While public institutions have led Nigeria’s recent successes, IUO’s regional dominance in the Sub Saharan Africa stage highlights growing diversity in Nigeria’s ICT talent pipeline and the impact of university-level Huawei ICT Academies.

The team will travel to China to compete in the Global Final against Regional Grand Prize winners and top regional qualifiers from Asia-Pacific, Europe, the Americas, and other African regions. The Network Track typically evaluates expertise in communication networks, routing, switching, security, and emerging technologies such as 5G and cloud integration.

This success underscores IUO’s investment in ICT training and partnerships with Huawei, including on-campus academies and skill-building programs. #huaweiictcompetition #huaweicompetition
  • IGBINEDION UNIVERSITY CALLS FOR URGENT ACTION AGAINST DEFORESTATION

Prof. Lawrence Ikechukwu Ezemonye, PhD, FAS, Vice-Chancellor of Igbinedion University, Okada (IUO), has called on governments and stakeholders worldwide to take immediate action against deforestation.

Speaking at the University’s 2026 International Day of Forests event, Prof. Ezemonye represented by Deputy Vice-Chancellor - Academics and Research - Prof. Blessing Ose Oligbi, described sustainability as a “living principle” at IUO.

He noted that forests cover 31% of the Earth’s land surface and harbour over 80% of terrestrial biodiversity, yet 10 million hectares are lost annually. Nigeria has one of Africa’s highest deforestation rates.

The Vice-Chancellor warned of rising flooding, desertification, and climate change, urging intensified research, sustainable practices, and stronger collaboration.

The event included a keynote address by Edo State officials and ended with a symbolic tree-planting exercise.
